Kenshi Review – The Harshest Open World Ever Made

Genre: Open-World Sandbox RPG  |  Platform: PC  |  Price: $29.99  |  Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.5/5

Kenshi begins with you owning nothing, knowing nothing, and being capable of nothing. There is no tutorial. No quest marker. No kind stranger to guide you. You are dropped into a brutal desert world where everything — bandits, animals, starvation, the environment itself — will try to kill you. And it is absolutely brilliant.

What Kind of Game Is Kenshi?

Kenshi is a squad-based open-world RPG with base-building, real-time combat, and a completely freeform story. You set your own goals: become a wealthy trader, build a fortress from scratch, lead a rebellion against a slave empire, or just try to survive the wasteland one day at a time. No two playthroughs are the same.

The Freedom Is Staggering

You can recruit a crew of wanderers, build a town in the desert, farm food, smelt ore, research new technologies, and eventually field an army. Or you can go it alone as a solo wanderer who gets beaten up daily until you're strong enough to fight back. Kenshi doesn't care what you do — the world just keeps moving whether you succeed or fail.

The Combat Is Punishing (and Great)

Combat in Kenshi is real-time and chaotic. Characters get limbs severed, knocked unconscious, or taken prisoner. Healing is manual. Losing a fight doesn't mean game over — it means being dragged somewhere terrible and having to escape. The scars of every battle stay with your characters, making survival feel genuinely earned.

The Rough Edges

Let's be fair: Kenshi is a janky, buggy, ugly game made by a tiny team. The graphics are dated, the AI occasionally breaks, and the interface is confusing. But beneath the rough exterior is one of the most creative and ambitious games a small studio has ever shipped.

Verdict

If you want a game that respects your intelligence, gives you real freedom, and creates stories you'll tell for years — Kenshi is unlike anything else. A cult classic that deserves every fan it has.
